Learn more about World IPv6 Day.

ipv6world.asia-X-w6d_h.jpg

What is "World IPv6 Day" (8 Jun 2011)?

8 June, 2011 is dubbed "World IPv6 Day" as on that day, Facebook (www.facebook.com), Google (www.google.comwww.youtube.com) and Yahoo (www.yahoo.com), websites with more than one billion combined visits each day, are joining major content delivery networks Akamai and Limelight Networks, and the Internet Society, for the first global-scale trial of the new Internet Protocol, IPv6.  Participants will offer their content over IPv6 for a 24-hour "test flight".

One of the goals of the World IPv6 Day is to motivate organizations across the industry - Internet service providers, hardware makers, operating system vendors and web companies - to prepare their services for IPv6 to ensure a successful transition as IPv4 addresses run out.

World IPv6 Day is destined to expose potential issues under controlled conditions and address them as soon as possible. The vast majority of users should be able to access services as usual, but in rare cases, misconfigured or misbehaving network equipment, particularly in home networks, may impair access to participating websites during the trial. Current estimates are that 0.05% of users may experience such problems, but participating organizations will be working together with operating system manufacturers, home router vendors and ISPs to minimize the number of users affected. Participants will also be working together to provide tools to detect problems and offer suggested fixes in advance of the trial.

1.     Call for Participation in IPv6 "test flight" on 8 June

Content providers, media organizations, telecommunication companies and all Internet industry players in Hong Kong as well as the HKSAR government departments are invited to join the IPv6 24-hour Test Flight on 8 June 2011. Let's join hand to ensure a successful transition. You may want to participate in the following ways:

·        Enable the IPv6 capability of your corporate main website

·        Internet service providers: make IPv6 connectivity available to their users

·        Web companies: bring your company's website online using IPv6, by making it accessible using dual stack technology and provide a AAAA record for the site.

·        Operating system makers: implement specific software updates

·        Backbone providers: establish IPv6 peering with each other

·        Hardware and home gateway manufacturers: update firmware

·        All players in the Internet: spread the word of World IPv6 Day! The greater the scope of the trial, the more effective it will be for all participants.

Join us on the 24-hour 'test flight' and prepare your services for IPv6 to ensure a successful transition.  Please also encourage and invite your partners and your customers to join the test flight.

2.     IPv6 Hong Kong Directory - IPv6 enabled websites

If you are already IPv6 ready, why not let the world know your effort on IPv6 deployment? Already have IPv6 capability? Tell us now.

3.     Online Survey on IPv6 Awareness

Besides the industry's readiness on IPv6, World IPv6 Day X IPv6World.Asia campaign would also like to conduct an online survey, to get a sense on the public's awareness on IPv6. Survey result will be announced on the World IPv6 Day. Please fill in now! http://www.isoc.hk/ipv6survey/

4.     IPv6 Seminar on 8 Jun 2011, in which real IPv6 deployment cases and strategic importance of deploying IPv6 will be shared.

IPv6World.Asia since 2007

What is IPv6World.Asia?

About the need for IPv6

IPv4 has approximately four billion IP addresses (the sequence of numbers assigned to each Internet-connected device). The explosion in the number of people, devices and web services on the Internet means that IPv4 is running out of space. IPv6, the new Internet protocol, which provides many billion times bigger address space, will connect the billions of people not connected today and will help ensure the Internet can continue to grow at an ever increasing rate.

Objective

With IPv4 addresses running out this year, the industry must act quickly to do full IPv6 adoption or risk not being able to communicate with growing number of Internet users who have IPv6 addresses only. We should help, not only motivate companies to prepare their services for IPv6, but also provide assistance and useful information on how to deploy IPv6 effectively and efficiently.

Target Participants

All companies which are using or providing services via Internet including ISPs, content providers, cloud services providers, large enterprises and SMEs.  CIOs/CTOs & Network/Systems Managers/Engineers.

New Generation of the Internet - The Evolution of IPv6
新一代互聯網
- IPv6時代

Date : 3 June 2011 (Friday)
Time : 3:15pm - 5:30pm
Venue : Conference Hall 1 & 2, G/F, Core Building, Phase I, Hong Kong Science Park
Co-organiser: Internet Society Hong Kong

Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation is delighted to co-host the upcoming Exchange @ Science Park with Internet Society Hong Kong (ISOC HK) aiming to bring audience an overview of the new generation of the Internet - the evolution of IPv6.

2011 is a pivotal year for the Internet as the address space used by the current version of the Internet protocol, IPv4, has already been fully depleted earlier this year. Without action, we risk increased costs and limited functionality online for Internet users everywhere. The only long-term solution to this problem is adoption of IPv6, which provides over 4 billion times more space.

Despite the exhaustion of the available IPv4 address pool announced on 3 February 2011, deployment of IPv6 remains limited around the globe. Faced with the complete depletion of IPv4 addresses, all stakeholders must implement IPv6 as soon as possible in order to ensure the long-term growth of their businesses. It should also be noted that any further delay in IPv6 adoption will make the Internet fragmented and communications among Internet users will be affected seriously.  To encourage organizations conducting trial of IPv6, the Internet Society (ISOC) has declared June 8th 2011 as World IPv6 Day, on which some biggest content providers such as Facebook, Yahoo, Google and Akamai will make their content available over IPv6.

In the first part, ISOC-HK will give a brief overview of the roles and contributions of ISOC in network standard and technology development in the world.  The second part will touch on IPv6 including the background of IPv6, the status of deployment in the Asia Pacific Region and Hong Kong, the operational issues, deployment problems, security issues and transition mechanism.

We are very glad to have different honorable guests to share the latest development of the IPv6:
